Listening is always socially and historically situated, and never neutral. With the session She Who Dances Through the Night, sound practitioner Nkisi invites us to remember this. In her work with sound, Nkisi is interested in sound as a process of collective practice towards restoration and re-worlding.
She Who Dances Through the Night draws inspiration from Pombagira, a spiritual presence in Afro-Brazilian traditions associated with the crossroads, the night, movement, and transformation. The session is rooted in spiritual lineages shaped by Central and West African cosmologies that are reimagined in Brazil. Drawing upon these polyphonies, Nkisi invokes the dancefloor as a threshold where rhythm, memory, and unseen forces meet.
This approach is also reflected in the artist’s moniker—in Congolese cosmology, Nkisi refers to a spiritual vessel through which parallel dimensions are activated and made present as matter, ritual, and intention converge to mediate between the visible and invisible worlds.
This activity is carried out as part of the Oko Ucha project, co-funded by the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage through the Culture Promotion Fund.
