The Landscapes of Lack exhibition is a presentation of the Lack of Forest archive. The project has been carried out by Martyna Miller since 2018 in the Tuchola Forest, hit in 2017 by a tempest that destroyed the local woods and left a lasting impression on the life of the local community. Miller builds up a material and social archive of the event, searching for ways to commemorate and process a collective trauma connected with the environmental disaster. The display contains works and artefacts that have come to be as a result of a research and artistic process that took more than ten years. Alongside wood and items found at the site of the tempest there are, amongst others, ceramic works, fabrics, textiles, paintings, texts, photographs, sound and film materials included in the show. A multimedia archive comprising a diversity of objects serves as a form of remembering and communicating history. All these elements create an alternative mythology of a place and community – a tale of resilience and the possibility of transformation, and of the fact that even at a scene of lack a new form of life and collectivity may be born.
_____
Martyna Miller – an interdisciplinary artist, director and anthropologist, educated in Warsaw and Sarajevo, who obtained her PhD in Fine Arts from the University of the Arts in Poznań (under the direction of Izabella Gustowska). Co-founder of the Polanki duo and the TYNA collective. Since 2018, she has been co-running the DOMIE project in Poznań, an experimental enterprise at the intersection of art, architecture and social sciences. Her projects explore the relationships of memory and body. She uses recollections and their reconstructions to develop methods of working with the mediality of experience. She is interested in the relations between nature and community in the processes of healing, production and transformation. Her latest projects, including Memory Carp, Intimacy of Waters and Sexinsitu, investigate individual and collective connections with water and ocean, thus entering the realm of hydro-activism. She works with video, performance, sound and other media. Her works often come in cycles, sets, as gestures or pieces of broader research. Received a grant from the Mister of Culture and National Heritage (2014), SIGMA Scholarship (2013-2015) and TOKAS residency in Tokyo (2020). Her works have been presented in the Teatr Nowy in Warsaw, Teatr Powszechny in Warsaw, Teatr Dramatyczny in Warsaw, Teatr Współczesny in Wrocław, Sort/Hvid in Copenhagen, Teater Nordkraft in Aalborg, Kampnagel in Hamburg, Zachęta – National Gallery of Art in Warsaw, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Arsenal Municipal Gallery in Poznań, Gdańsk City Gallery, BWA Wrocław Główny, BWA Zielona Góra, and many others.
