Elliot Perkins and Chris Jones are members of Ultra-red, a collective that investigates sound as a method for engaging in dialogue about social conditions—one grounded in listening rather than speaking.
From 18 to 27 September, the artists conducted meetings and workshops with the Spanish-speaking community living in and around Słupsk. The project was supported by mediators Damian Martinto and Gabriel Moliet Rjohas, who established contact with Spanish-speaking participants and took an active role throughout the process.
During the first session, the work centred on materials prepared by Damian and Gabriel, who brought ten sound objects to share with the group. Participants listened to these recordings together, and based on this collective listening, developed a set of questions addressing connection, community, and mutual aid.
In the following phase, sound walks through Słupsk allowed participants to record their own sound objects, deepening reflection on empathy, responsibility, and shared experience. From these activities emerged the project’s central question:
“How do we build community?”
The week-long programme concluded with a public presentation of the research outcomes on Saturday, 27 September. During the event, participants—through active engagement and collective listening to the sound objects created by the core group—explored possible answers to how communities are formed and sustained.
