It takes all sorts of forms. It serves a particular function – it is there to relate what can, after all, be seen, and it is not always accessible. Sometimes it is difficult to understand it, the tone of the sender being too personal. If it does not fit the ordinary model of information, it might have to be rewritten? Who is speaking today and on whose behalf? Who is asking?
Artists use text as a tool: a tool for shifting meanings, for change – on an individual scale and in collective practices, for redefining, dismantling social norms and demanding space. Language is more than an arrangement of syllables and sounds, it also poses questions about representation and audibility of marginalised voices.
The rooms that house the text-exhibition are open but, nevertheless, sometimes cramped (after all, there are only two of them). The exhibition space is ordinary, yet sometimes with a touch of celebratory mood. It is entirely familiar to the staff and the audience who visits it regularly to look at art, but also to attend language tandems. It becomes a site of presentation, a scene and platform for private confessions and negotiating stereotypes rooted in language, processing speech and searching for alternative versions of text in an era where the changing language ceases to be sufficient or falsifies reality.
