Hands-on Biomaterials Workshop

Blanka Byrwa

24 October 2025

BGSW / The Tower (Baszta)

Curated by: Romuald Demidenko

The event accompanies the exhibition “Coalitions of waters,” which is part of the CIRCULATIONS program, co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund — a state special-purpose fund.

How can we use algae? And how can we use natural resources wisely, without depleting them?
Biomaterial design is a field that bridges tradition and innovation — combining organic matter with contemporary technologies. Plastic became popular because of its durability and resilience, but what could replace synthetic materials?

During the workshop, we will focus on a locally endangered species of red algae, overexploited as a result of human activity. This is Furcellaria lumbricalis, from which agar is produced — a gelling substance used both in the food industry and in the creation of bioplastic.

Participants will learn basic methods of making bioplastic that can easily be replicated at home. They will receive practical tips on finding recipes, processing raw materials, and applying the results in practice. The workshop will conclude with the creation of bioplastic samples that participants can take with them.

The workshop with Blanka Byrwa activates the Algonology installation presented in the Tower, created in collaboration with Natalia Gwiazdowska.

This event accompanies the exhibition “Water Coalitions,” funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund — a state special-purpose fund.
