The exhibition is intended as a selection of works by participants in past editions of the Young Art Biennale \u201cFish Eye\u201d, which has been organised since 2001 and has had ten editions to date. The artists selected for the project have become a permanent feature of the Polish art landscape, and their works and productions reveal a significant diversity of attitudes and strategies. It is intriguing that, in addition to works dealing with issues of existence, especially privacy and intimacy, there are also creations interpreting current social reality or redefining the past and our identity. Irrespective of this, there is no lack of works that refer to past aesthetics and styles in a conceptual and formalistic manner. The existence of sunspots may prove that even the sun, such an unchanging and stable reference point for the entire universe, may at times exhibit an unexpected variability in its\u00a0form. Some people view sunspots as heralds of imminent disasters or cataclysms and believe that an increased solar activity may have a negative impact on our emotional condition. Crisis situations which involve waiting for the inevitable may result in either indifference or heightened activity. We might observe rational people acting erratically and those with depressive tendencies behaving rationally. The exhibition \u201cSunspots\u201d features works by female artists who speak of loneliness in times of crisis brought about by intimate emotions or external circumstances, and of inevitable turning points in people’s lives. Attempts to create certain rituals as forms of self-therapy help to purify and free oneself from accumulated emotions. Painful experiences become the impetus for the creative process and the inspiration to continually expand the artistic practice. By exploring their own bodies and personal experiences, and by recalling their traumas and discovering herstories, the artists bring to light the thesis that man, despite destructive tendencies towards their own kind and the natural world, still remains nature\u2019s most perfect creation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The exhibition \u201cDays of Being Wild\u201d is a curated project aimed at exploring the relationship between the official history of institutions and a broad definition of memory, both individual and collective, including its institutionalised visual representation. The exhibition also addresses the different perspectives and narratives of history that we are confronted with in the mass media, centres of power and knowledge, as well as within individual local communities. The Young Artists Biennale \u201cFish Eye\u201d is a periodic competition with a tradition of nearly 20 years. The biennale offers an interdisciplinary character of the presented works and a cross-section of ages up to 35. The exhibition committee selects professional artists as well as undergraduate and graduate students of art colleges and universities. According to the rules of the biennale, artists may submit works in any medium. The post-competition exhibition is\u00a0intended to present debut works and illustrate the spectrum of creative activity of artists of the young generation. The undertaking aims to show the most representative range of the latest trends occurring in Polish art, especially its multifaceted nature, the diversity of viewpoints and cultural tolerance in the broad sense. A great merit of the biennale is the selection, by means of a competition, of works by graduates of various universities, who live both in large artistic centres and on the peripheries. An important aim of the project is also the confrontation of works and young artists with eminent art critics and theoreticians within the framework of meetings, self-presentations (which is specific to the \u201cFish Eye\u201d) and a panel discussion with the participation of authorities of Polish art criticism and the local public. Another invaluable asset of the project is the possibility to present contemporary art to the community living in the sub-region of S\u0142upsk, which is located outside the major centres (Gda\u0144sk, Szczecin) and where the Baltic Gallery of Contemporary Art is the only professional exhibition centre within a 100 km radius. The theme of the solo exhibition „Rol-A-Drop Twin Jack Pot” is the so-called\u00a0a \u201cdream machine\u201d once sketched by poet Elizabeth Bishop.\u00a0It resembles (due to the drawing reels) a one-armed bandit machine.\u00a0A series of such machines produced in the 1940s had this name: Rol-a-top Twin Jack Pot.\u00a0The poem opens questions about similarity-relation (which wins), but also difference-variety.\u00a0The medium that talks about matrix nature and the difference between varieties and prints is graphics.\u00a0I would like to show a series of several dozen lithographs (multiple prints from various matrices) and drawings, including drawings on lithographs, created in 2020 and last year.\u00a0Some of the lithographs were published in my last volume of poetry „Osta\u0144ce”, just like the poem above.\u00a0The lithographs are personally printed (from stones) by me.\u00a0The prints and drawings will be supplemented with the author’s poetic commentary.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In the autobiographical Memoirs of Malte-Laurids Brigge (1910), Rainer Maria Rilke writes that „There are many people, but many more faces, because everyone has several of them.\u00a0There are people who wear one face for years, even though „the face wears out” and „falls apart like gloves worn while traveling.”\u00a0The „Refigurations” exhibition, in its perverse name, refers to the implementation procedures and titles of the painting cycles of the three invited artists.\u00a0At the same time, the exhibition is intended to be a part of the art that uses the technique and aesthetics of collage and patchwork.\u00a0As a result, the entire project is to consist of the actions, works and artistic gestures of artists who, although not linked by a common biography, are brought closer or connected by aesthetic and semantic games.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The vicious cycle of human-made and repeated disasters for thousands of years has brought us to a standstill and undermined our faith in humanity and the future.\u00a0Has the civilizational development of humanism really occurred?\u00a0Or will the primitive human instincts of domination, control and possession remain untamed even in the face of the destruction of humanity and the Earth?\u00a0The works presented at the exhibition reflect the common sense of the imminent self-annihilation of the human race as a result of the irreversible effects of environmental degradation, the nuclear threat and the war in Ukraine, which in fact has a wide impact on the functioning of the entire world.\u00a0Yet the authors of the works presented at the exhibition do not remain passive observers.\u00a0The artists analyze the intersections of historical memory and the socio-political realities of the present, at the same time rejecting individual melancholy in favor of multidimensional forms of criticism, resistance and indifference.\u00a0The exhibition as a whole is devoid of utopian illusions framed by anthropocentric, modern logic, and is instead based on a dystopian perspective and the recognition that coexistence is inherently in conflict.\u00a0How we use this conflictual nature of coexistence to solve the environmental and humanitarian crises we face today will largely determine the future we live in.\u00a0\/Oksana Karpovets\/<\/p>

We live in a world in which our society has been burdened with uncertainty about the future and a sense of spiritual fragmentation, and our bonds of belonging have been put to a severe test.\u00a0In the face of the ongoing war in Ukraine, culture should play an important role to strengthen our sense of identity in the democratic world.\u00a0Art also has an importance that cannot be overestimated, because like a barometer it reflects the instability of the world and the process of creation, dissolution and re-establishment of values.<\/p>

The „Human” exhibition is intended to integrate artists’ efforts towards a world that gives us a minimum of certainty for tomorrow and mutual solidarity.\u00a0The global crises, and in particular the Russian aggression against Ukraine, prove that a person can lose loved ones overnight and have their social environment shaken.<\/p>

We live in times when there are over twenty armed conflicts around the world.\u00a0However, public opinion was most shocked by the crimes of genocide in Bucha and other Ukrainian cities.\u00a0For a person living in the world after Auschwitz and Bucza, all fundamental narratives have lost their power.\u00a0Perhaps the world and man need to be reinvented.\u00a0„Human” is a project that aims to be a new voice and a new narrative in an still old world.<\/p>

Shortly after the outbreak of the war and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, refugee artists and their children were invited to the Baltic Gallery of Contemporary Art, who stayed in our institution for half a year.\u00a0During their stay, during numerous meetings, workshops and conversations, the initial concept of the „Human” exhibition was born, which arose from the natural need to refer to the issue of the war in Ukraine, the artists directly affected by it and their relatives.\u00a0The authors of the project concept are Oksana Karpovets from Ukraine and Edyta Wolska – director of the Baltic Gallery of Contemporary Art in S\u0142upsk.\u00a0The concept of the project goes beyond immediate circumstances and assumes the presentation of works that illustrate the humanistic fracture that affected the world and culture long before Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.\u00a0Modern man lives with the baggage of difficult experiences and as an individual, torn by the winds of history, who must reunite the world.\u00a0Therefore, the aim of the exhibition is an attempt to describe and tell the world anew.\u00a0„Human” is a project to which the curators – Oksana Karpovets and Edyta Wolska – invited artists mainly from Poland and Ukraine.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Marta Frej Visual artist, president of the Kulturoholizm Foundation, Maciek’s mother, activist, feminist.\u00a0She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts.\u00a0W\u0142adys\u0142aw Strzemi\u0144ski in \u0141\u00f3d\u017a.\u00a0She obtained her diploma in 2004. In the years 2005\u20132009 she was an assistant in the Painting and Drawing Studio of Marek Czajkowski at the Academy of Fine Arts in \u0141\u00f3d\u017a.\u00a0Winner of the Glasses of Equality 2015 award, awarded by the Foundation.\u00a0Izabela Jaruga-Nowacka.\u00a0Co-author of the book „Memes and Graffy” with Agnieszka Graff.\u00a0Winner of the Ol\u015bnienia Onet 2017 award in the art category.\u00a0Author of the book „120 faces of Marta Frej” and the herstory comic „Dromaderki”, created as part of a scholarship from the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship in 2018.\u00a0An illustrator who permanently cooperates with Gazeta Wyborcza and Polityka weekly.\u00a0The most popular works are paintings with captions illustrating the contemporary life of women in Poland.\u00a0The works, which took the form of paintings, were exhibited in various galleries throughout Poland.<\/p>

„Vulva or Shame” is an interdisciplinary exhibition by Marta Frej consisting of two parts: press illustrations and graphics created since 2016 regarding women’s rights and the situation of women in Poland, and artistic ceramics created since 2021, the topic of which is female corporeality in the context of shame, reduced to taboo.\u00a0The exhibition is a summary of recent years of work illustrating the social and political situation of women in Poland and the public debate related to the perception of women and their role in society.\u00a0The location of the project, the „Witches’ Tower”, is not accidental.\u00a0The Witches’ Tower was built in 1411-1415.\u00a0In the 17th century, the defensive tower was rebuilt into a prison for women accused of witchcraft.\u00a0According to available archival sources, 18 women were executed here.\u00a0They lost their lives for their knowledge, willingness to help other women, failure to conform to moral norms, courage and love of freedom.\u00a0For fighting for yourself.\u00a0It was no accident that the slogan „We are the granddaughters of the witches you failed to burn” often appeared on the Women’s Strike banners.\u00a0Because the contemporary fight for women’s rights is a fight for human rights, i.e. the right to bodily integrity and autonomy, to active and passive participation in elections, to hold public offices, to work, to fair and equal pay with men, to education and military service. , concluding contracts, to freedom in the field of family, parenting and religion.\u00a0The exhibition „Vulva or Shame” does not give or provide answers, but it asks many questions and invites to discuss what is difficult, willingly ignored, swept under the carpet and hidden in the closet.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

„Archimetries” is a project of a collective exhibition, which is intended to present the issues of broadly understood agglomeration aesthetics and the language of geometry that organizes it.\u00a0It is no secret to anyone that the history, form and way of organizing the city are components of a larger social reality, which – like the entire culture – has a symbolic and relational character, which consequently means that we can treat the city as a space of writing (or text) ” general”.\u00a0The city in this understanding is a textual and semiotic structure brought to life by individual and collective entities.\u00a0It is symptomatic that the works presented at the exhibition are not works clearly realized in the spirit of abstraction, because the intention of their authors is also to search for connections with the surroundings and the urban environment, and therefore also with architecture and urban planning.\u00a0The orders that unite both the works and the themes of the works are reduction, asceticism and repetition.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
