Mateusz Szczypiński was born in 1984 in Piekary Śląskie. He is a graduate from art history at the Jagiellonian University and from painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. He lives and works in Cracow.
The use of collage seems to be the most characteristic aspect of my creation. I mean not only the very technique, but also the way of thinking, which it does impose. Using ready elements, I can relate to particular and very important contents which are, however, taken out from their original context. On the one hand it is the use of quotations and referring to commonly known tradition, art icons and pictures which are in a way encoded in mass consciousness, but on the other hand, it’s going farther. With the help of them I can create new messages and situations which don’t have much in common with the ‘basis’ from which I start. I keep revolving around certain themes, nevertheless in this activity there is much intuition and accidentalness.
In my newest works I refer first of all to the period of modernism and avant-garde investigations and experiments with abstraction. For me it’s the rediscovering of the great works of another Golden Age of art. First of all I am interested in that particular moment, where the figuration ends and the abstraction begins. However, my approach is indulgent and I try to blur the line between them. I would like to show my works from this cycle in Słupsk.
