Whether at an individual or collective level, love itself has been manifested throughout the centuries by a rich repository of masks, figures and symbols, and yet any discourse on love has always been primarily determined by the fortuitousness of existence. This is due to the unique and ephemeral character of each such manifestation – the palpable here-and-now phenomenon of undeniable existence which consequently becomes the enemy of both logos and metaphysics. This space-time gives all passions an individual and unprecedented feeling of unique beauty and unmediated truth. On the other hand, as Barthes wrote: “A lover’s discourse … is completely forsaken by the surrounding languages, ignored, disparaged or derided by them (…) exiled from all gregarity. It has no recourse but to become the site, however exiguous, of an affirmation” … thus becoming the expression of “an extreme solitude”. The exhibition features works by a group of artists united by a similar distance to or relativisation of intimacy, closeness and understanding.
