Józef Robakowski is the creator of numerous films, photo series, drawings, installations, objects, and conceptual projects. The Łódź-based artist is one of the most outstanding Polish multi- and inter-media artists, and his work over the past two decades has become the most recognizable showcase of the neo-avant-garde movement in Poland. In addition to strictly artistic activities, Robakowski has long been actively involved in academic work, curating activities, and the organization of important events and artistic actions and projects in the area of art and its theory. Looking back at the artist’s oeuvre, which spans the last five decades, we are struck by the remarkable consistency and coherence in the aesthetic, formal and anthropological aspects. While his early work focused mainly linguistics, mass media and history of art, and with time, these themes began to be supplemented with time by other topics inspired by the iconography of unequivocally social or political provenance. The artist’s modus procedendi, his objects of reflection and visual penetration, are figures and representations referring to the idea of energy, efficiency and variability of human potentials. These, in line with the artist’s temperament, are subject to the imperative of what might be called, if quite perversely, “intuitive” geometry – an idea represented by some of the works displayed at the exhibition. These works show the use of “angles”, which for Robakowski had long become “cultural forms of personal fetish”.
