One of the consequences of globalization, which we observe unfolding before our eyes, is the phenomenon of fragmentation of the so-called grand narratives and the resulting need to escape into the peripheries. Tired of ideologies that are “fortified” with urban and architectural rhetoric, the modern individual often chooses to settle down away from the city or on the periphery of cultural centres. Such a decentralized and seemingly “fragmentary” environment allows us to regain peace of mind and freedom which can be found in small stories, private or local. Ephemeral as they may appear, such small stories are in fact the only potential guarantor of our freedom and independence. A present-day artist who chooses to live and work in suburbia or a country village, often assumes the role of a trickster – their attitude deeply ambivalent and highly ambiguous. No stranger to problems everyday life, the underworld and tabloid news, a trickster is skilful at using pastiches, paradoxes and metaphors, and always ready for a change of tack. All these are equivalents of strategies that can be found in the work of creative individuals who operate on the peripheries of the artistic mainstream and choose to seek freedom outside academic discourse.
