Ewa Juszkiewicz is a graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, where she studied in the years 2004-2009. She cultivates painting, drawing, animation, and object art. In recent years she was an author of a few solo exhibitions and took part in more than twenty group exhibitions, presenting her works in well-known Polish artistic centres like Foksal Gallery Foundation, BWA Bielska Gallery or the Kordegarda Gallery in Warsaw. Her newest exhibition entitled Things We Don’t Talk About is an aesthetical and anthropological reflection on the image and idea of person. In her painting works Ewa Juszkiewicz has been dealing with an analysis of the portrait as the idealistic image of the Western man, who – since the times of the Renaissance – has been to represent on the one hand all the cultural motives and standards, and on the other hand to be a reflection of all the existential flaws and wounds experienced by the subject. Apart from the ‘psychoanalysis’ of the portrayed person, her consideration for the notions of beauty and ugliness ascribed to each image is a not less important dimension of her works. Ewa Juszkiewicz indicates at the fluidity and changeability of these notions. The artist joggles with motives and masks, articulating the arbitrary character of the ‘norm’ and presenting critical states. Her creation is an attempt at exceeding innocence to the same extent as eroticism, beauty and ugliness. It’s a kind of grotesque, from which a new postmodern ‘beauty’ is born.
