Astronomy of Colour

Curated by
Weronika Teplicka

Discipline / watercolour
Period of stay / August – September 2024

As part of the project ‘Astronomy of Colour’, I will explore chromatic phenomena and refer to the rich history of plein air painting in Ustka. During the residency I will make a series of watercolours based on the constant motif of the sea and harbour as seen from the window of my accommodation. I will subject these works of variable format (from A4 to A2) to further installation at the closing exhibition of the residency. Although I will base my work on actual views, I will approach them in a painterly rather than illustrative fashion. The fixed frame will serve as a pretext to rediscover colour theory. The project aims to revive the long tradition of plein-air painting workshops in Ustka, with particular emphasis on the figure of Jan Cybis. This outstanding painter, member of the Paris Committee and long-standing professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw made numerous visits to the city (August 1949, August 1962, July and August 1967). His ‘Painter’s Notes. Diaries 1954-1966’ show that he usually made a series of watercolours at the time. This publication is the source of the eponymous reflection on the changing ‘colour constellations’ for my residency. With this historical context, my artistic residency will also be part of the nationwide celebration of the centenary of the Paris Committee. /Grzegorz Kozera/.
