WITCHES’ TOWER

Rapid urbanization and industrialization which swept through the Western world from the early 19th century made living conditions in large cities unbearable and prompted extensive migration to the country. It was out of love for nature and simple living, which can already be found in the famous Walden (1854) by Henry David Thoreau, that famous city architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright began to emphasize the beauty of the peripheries. Soon, writers, poets and artists followed suit. By the end of the twentieth century, the ensuing globalization processes contributed to the fragmentation of the so-called grand narratives and the escape of man into the element of the periphery. It transpires that the contemporary man, weary of ideologies “fortified” with urban and architectural discourse, often chooses to live away from the city or on the margins of great cultural centres. In this decentralized and seemingly “fragmented” world, we can regain peace and achieve freedom which manifests itself in small, private or local, stories. Such accounts, despite their ephemeral nature, are the only potential guarantor of our freedom and independence. A contemporary artist often consciously and intentionally chooses to function in the provinces, suburbs, or to penetrate suburbia far away from the city turmoil and safely isolated from the dangers of the pandemic.
