The project begins with observations and experiments on the coast during the winter months of January and February. I will study the circulation of water and winds in the atmosphere, as well as natural and physical phenomena. The aim of the project is to explore changes in the landscape, especially the process of transition of substances between gaseous, liquid and solid states when the air temperature reaches the critical point of zero degree Celsius. The project will be set in a specific place and time and will evolve with the residency. While analysing the influence of local culture and architecture and observing the local ecosystem devoid of tourists, I will also be looking for the relationship between natural materials such as water and sea salt, clay and sand, stones and wood, and the ceramic material and its structural properties. Whilst usually working with glass, this time I will focus on its primary ingredient – glaze. The residency will result in a spatial installation that comments on and commemorates the natural environment. I will use sculpture, film and sound to represent the experience of a winter stay at the Baltic Sea. It will be an attempt to arrest and immortalise the context of the residency from the perspective of the person who came there. /Aleksandra Zawistowska/
